Q: What should I bring with me to tryouts?
A: Bring all the required paperwork to the first day of tryouts. Players should bring a water bottle and any prescribed inhalers, if applicable.

Q: What should I wear to tryouts?
A: Wear comfortable clothes (t-shirt, shorts/spandex, socks, and cross trainers/running shoes). Do not wear shirts exposing a bare midriff. Do not wear jewelry. Kneepads are not required, but may be desirable.

Q: What is considered when deciding who makes the team?
A: The coaching staff will be looking for coachable ATHLETES: girls who have a great work ethic, love to compete, and want to become better players.

Prior volleyball experience or skill helps, but is not required. Prospective student-athletes will be tested and evaluated for overall athletic ability and level of volleyball skill. Coaches will apply the following criteria (in this order):

1. ATTITUDE: Players who are positive, competitive, and eager to learn. Bonus points are awarded to those who demonstrate strong leadership skills and to those who are willing to take risks and learn from mistakes.

2. ATHLETIC ABILITY: Players with the ability to learn and perform complex skills.

3. POSITION: Players whose skills fit a specific need for the team’s overall balance.

Q: How many players will be selected?
A: There is not a set number for any of the teams, but the Freshmen team will likely take 10-12 players, the Junior Varsity team will likely take 10-12 players, and the Varsity team hopes to take 12-14 players. Though there may be a number of returning volleyball players, no one is guaranteed a spot.

Q: Can a freshmen make the Varsity team?
A: Yes. Only freshmen are eligible to make the Freshmen team. Only freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to make the Junior Varsity team. All grade levels, however, are eligible to make the Varsity team.

Q: Do I have to attend every day of tryouts?
A: Yes. Please do not schedule any conflicting appointments or vacations during the tryouts or pre-season schedule. It is very important that you are in attendance for all of tryouts as well as pre-season practices.

Q: When does the season start? / When does practice start?
A: The season starts with tryouts. The Monday following tryouts week will be the first day of practice. Please do not schedule vacations or make plans after August 10th.

Q: Can I participate in another fall sport or activity at the same time as volleyball?
A: Yes. However, this may only be done if you can manage both activities without conflict. You may not miss volleyball practices, matches, activities, or events in order to participate in another activity.

Q. Can I participate in a club sport outside of high school while in-season?
A. Yes. See answer above. Considerations will be made on a case-by-case basis for out-of-season sports.

Q: What options do I have if I am not selected to a team?
A: Tryouts can be a difficult experience for both the athletes and the coaches. One of the toughest jobs for a coach is the final decision about which players make the team and which players do not. The Wolverine coaching staff strives to make all decisions fairly, without bias, and after extended deliberation and evaluation of each prospective student-athlete.

During the tryout process, it is not unusual for some girls to decide they would rather not continue trying out. If you think you’d like to withdraw from consideration for a spot on the team, please talk it over first with one of the coaches, it is possible that you may be underestimating your chances.

If you are not selected this season, and you would like to try out again in the future, there are other options available to you that may help you in the future.

1. Become a team manager. Volleyball managers have a chance to learn leadership and organizational skills and fill a valuable role on the team. Varsity-level managers will receive a letter at the end of the season.

2. Attend volleyball camps/clinics. There are many clinics and camps in the area available for high school athletes. many of which can be found on this website.

3. Try out for club volleyball. There are many clubs in the Northern Virginia area, with teams at all age-levels, that compete during the off-season (tryouts are generally in early November). All players are highly encouraged to tryout and participate in club volleyball.
