VOLLEYBALL TRYOUTS
AUGUST 2010

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How do the coaches select players?
A: The coaching staff will be looking for coachable athletes: girls who have a great work ethic, love to compete, and want to become better players.
Prior volleyball experience or skill helps, but is not required (especially at the Freshmen level!). Prospective student-athletes will be tested and evaluated for overall athletic ability and level of volleyball skill. Coaches will apply the following criteria (in this order):
1. ATTITUDE: Players who are positive, competitive, and eager to learn. Bonus points are awarded to those who demonstrate strong leadership skills and to those who are willing to take risks and learn from mistakes.
2. ATHLETIC ABILITY: Players with the ability to learn and perform complex physical skills.
3. POSITION: Players whose skills fit a specific need for the team’s overall balance.
Q: How many players will be selected?
A: There is not a set number for any of the teams, but the Freshmen team will likely take 10-12 players, the Junior Varsity team will likely take 10-12 players, and the Varsity team hopes to take 12-14 players. Though there may be a number of returning volleyball players, no one is guaranteed a spot.
Q: What do we need to bring with us to tryouts?
A: Players need to bring all required paperwork with them on the first day in order to participate: VHSL Physical Form, Emergency Care Form (2 copies), Player Profile Form, Communicable Diseases Form, FCPS Participation Policy, and Parent Transportation Form. All of these forms can be found on the Tryouts Page.
Q: My daughter is new to the school, what does she need to do in order to play?
A: If you are a transfer or new to the area, you must be registered with the school before you can tryout for a sport. Please also note that any physical form that is required for school registration is not accepted at tryouts. You must have the VHSL Physical Form completed in order to participate.
Q: When is the first day of practice?
A: There is a mandatory meeting for all participating players on Friday, August 13th, and practice starts immediately after tryouts on Monday, August 16th.
Q: Where can my daughter get a physical?
A: You can always make an appointment with your family physician to get a physical. If you are looking for a place to get a last-minute physical, check out the list on the Tryouts Page. Word to the wise - do not wait until the last minute to get a physical. You can turn in your physical forms during the summer into Barb Mahoney in the Activities Office on Wednesdays from 9am - 11am.
Q: Are there camps that I can send my daughter to over the summer?
A: Yes! There are many possibilities in this area. A list of local camps has been posted on the Camps page.
